Ethnic Clashes in Myanmar Force Fleeing into Thailand

(MENAFN) Hundreds of individuals, including over 100 Myanmar military personnel, crossed into Thailand after ethnic Karen troops captured several army outposts in eastern Myanmar over the weekend, according to local news sources and Thai authorities.

The confrontation started late Saturday when troops from the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) launched coordinated assaults on military-controlled sites in Karen State, a news outlet reported on Sunday.

Thailand’s armed forces verified that approximately 100 Myanmar junta soldiers had entered Thai soil. These troops were disarmed, given medical treatment for their wounds, and handled according to "international protocols."

Thai authorities also reported that over 400 non-combatants escaped the fighting and were moved to secure shelters within Thailand.

A similar episode occurred in May, when 62 junta soldiers reportedly crossed into Thailand following insurgent strikes on military posts near the frontier.

Meanwhile, separate reports emerging from within Myanmar stated that a lethal air raid on a monastery in Sagaing Region killed at least 30 individuals on Friday, further intensifying the country's already dire humanitarian situation.

The KNLA has been engaged in an armed struggle for the autonomy of the Karen ethnic group since 1949.

It is one of Myanmar’s most prominent ethnic resistance groups and primarily conducts operations in Karen State, a region plagued by persistent conflict in the southern and southeastern parts of the country.
